Postplatz Forum, Waiblingen

In order to revive and reinvigorate the historic city centre, an urban planning investors’ competition was held in 2004, awarding to the winner ”Alter Postplatz” site in the heart of the Swabian town of Waiblingen, which was being used as a carpark. Matrix was able to win the competition with a concept for the re-grouping and restoration of the historical pathways and the framing of the square in the town centre through the formation of a new plaza border. And so the new building was structured in two parts that mark an „open shopping street“, thereby creating an extension of the pedestrian zone. The connecting element is the underground carpark built completely underneath the site. In addition to the retail space on the ground floor and the first floor, with credit-worthy tenants such as MÜLLER drugstore, C&A, APOLLO, OPTIK etc., a medical centre was established on the second floor.
